It’s a historic day at Avontuur and for our champion sire, VAR with his progeny Via Afrika and Contador bagging 2 Gr 1 races at Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg today!
Via Afrika once again showed her incredible speed and determination to beat the opposition by winning the R600 000 Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint over 1200 m under the capable hands of jockey Alec Forbes. She was up against quality sprinters like Equus champion Princess Victoria, All is Secret and Mike de Kock trained Welwitschia and this achievement sets her well on the way of her sprint queen predecessor Val de Ra. We look forward to much more from this flying filly.
Son of VAR, Contador proved the surprise of the day when he beat established favourites like Cape Royal, Northern Emperor and Cap Alright in the Gr 1 Golden Horse Sprint over 1200 m. After a patchy career to date, this win must be a joyfull day for trainer Charles Laird and his connections. We are so thrilled that he has come through and showed the style we’ve become used to from our VAR progeny and wish everyone much success with him in future.
