Son of Oratorio wins Gr 2 in Australia

The Australian Cup and $1 million in stakes earnings is in sight for Mourinho after he ran the race of his life to claim the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.

The 7 YO who could lay claim to being the most improved galloper in Australia added Saturday’s race to a record that was relatively modest 18 months ago.

Always a capable galloper, the son of Irish-bred stallion Oratorio, now standing at Avontuur Estate in South Africa, scored the second weight-for-age win of his current campaign by three-quarters of a length over triple Group 1 winner Happy Trails. Also among the beaten division was the favourite, the Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist.

Mourinho, who won the Australia Stakes first-up and was third in the CF Orr Stakes, will head to the Australian Cup in mid-March.
