Avontuur’s resident stallion Var had an impressive double at Clairwood Park on Sunday.
His 2yo son, the beautifully bred Viva La Var, made a winning debut in the first race, while Var’s emerging star Via Africa made hacks of her rivals when she won her fifth race from just seven starts.
Competing in the Listed Kwa Zulu Natal Stakes, Via Africa had too many guns for her outclassed rivals, and drew off to an easy victory under inform rider, Sean Cormack.
It is a second feature for the super speedy filly, who had previously claimed the Gr2 Tony Taberer Southern Cross Stakes last year. Via Africa looks hard to oppose in some of the upcoming features, and she looks a G1 filly of the future!
By comparison, Viva La Var (out of the very quick National Assembly mare Viva), was making his debut on Sunday. However, the well bred colt dug down deep to get the better of Fire The Rocket.
Var has enjoyed a superb season with his juveniles – and had another eye catching winner on Wednesday when Sea Cat mowed down her rivals to win by three lengths.
The stallion is well represented on the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. Var’s yearlings on sale include youngsters out of such stakes winning mares as Alejate and Glenrossal as well as a half-brother to speedy filly Captain’s Lullaby.
