It was appropriate on Avontuur’s Fillies Guineas race day this year, that resident stallion and Champion sire VAR, should produce three winners! It started off well already in the first race of the day when The Navigator streaked past the winning post and just got better and better as the day went on.
The high point of the day for the Avontuur team, where VAR is at stud, was definitely Via Afrika’s spectacular win in the Gr 2 R200 000 Tony Taberer Southern Cross. Ridden by Alec Forbes and trained by Duncan Howell, this talented daughter of VAR showed the fantastic style so typical of his progeny. (Above, the winning group pose with their memento’s).
The day ended off well with a win by another VAR, Heritage Wood, ridden by Karl Nesius and trained by Eric Sands. This was a huge win for a relatively small training stable and as such, added to the lustre of the day.
