Avontuur Estate is proud to host the 5th Cabernet Franc Carnival this Saturday from 11-4 when 21 of the varietal’s most passionate producers will share their wines with around 350 Cab Franc fans. As Avontuur is a long-time producer of the wine in a single varietal format, it is appropriate that this winery and owners the Taberer family, has been supporting the event from the inaugural Carnival in 2015.
“Our 2014 vintage is the 23rd year of Avontuur producing a single varietal,” comments winemaker Jan van Rooyen. “The first vintage of a single varietal Cabernet Franc produced at Avontuur was from the 1996 harvest followed by a 1999 vintage which was reviewed in John Platter’s Wine Guide of 2001. Including those first two, Avontuur has produced nine bottled vintages over the last 23 years.”
Over and above the single varietals, Cabernet Franc has often featured as the driving force in the Estate’s flagship red blend, the Baccarat as well. The current vintage is the 2012 which once again consists of a blend of 39% Cab Franc, 22& Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot respectively and 5% Petit Verdot.
Avontuur is offering the 2014 Cabernet Franc and the 2012 Baccarat on Saturday from their stand at the Carnival and also has a 2-pack special on both wines from the tasting room. Two bottles of the Cabernet Franc will sell for R300 (Normally R360) and a 2-pack of the Baccarat for R500 instead of the usual R600.
