Have you ever booked yourself into a hospital to undergo a life quality improvement procedure with the expectation of a good outcome, only to recover from your ordeal 7 years later?
At the age of 45, I was married for 23 years, the father of 4 children of respectively 9, 11, 12 and 14 and the sole breadwinner of my family of 6. I’d reached the top of the ladder in my career as CEO within a corporate banking group when I entered the hospital on 16 October 2000 with exactly the same expectation of a good outcome, just as you would do.
However, for me things took a turn for the worst and what was supposed to be a life quality improvement procedure turned into a complete disaster which resulted in a dramatic drop in life quality and an intense combat for recovery while I was left without bladder and colon control, a non-functioning prostrate as well as a partly paralyzed right leg and foot.
During the 7 years, I was literally stripped from everything I previously had and nurtured – health, career, income, reserves, assets, marriage, family as well as my human dignity (the aspect that got damaged most), only to learn six valuable lessons.
Equally so, does all of us have a story to tell, although a story only reveals an objective experience – the WHAT (contents) of an experience. Unfortunately, most people are stuck in their objective experience and sadly fail to see the significance of their trauma or discomfort – the WHY behind the what. And this is exactly what my talk is about – to share my experience with audiences to help people to uncover and to understand the significance of their story.
