Saturday, 8 December 2012 sees the annual R750 000 Gr 1 Avontuur Fillies Guineas race day, combined for the first time this year with the fun and international flavour of the “Inter-Continental Village” concept in Cape Town.
According to Avontuur Estate GMPippa Mickleburgh, when approached to host the “Village” on this first big race day of the Cape Summer Season, she immediately saw the benefits for the Avontuur event. “I was lucky enough to attend the race day inJohannesburga year or so ago and couldn’t believe the interest from the general public with nearly 20 000 visitors thronging the course environs to support their nationalities’ stands, music, food and crafts! With a charity angle added to the main race whereby each horse participating carries a donation amount, the event is even more worthwhile, “ she says.
The VIP area and Somerset Room set-up at Kenilworth will continue as usual with pre-booked tables for groups, corporates and racing fans, but for casual visitors a full day of free activities are laid on.
The participating countries are Lebanon, Italy, Greece, India, Thailand, Greece, Portugal, Turkey and South Africa, each of which will have a marquee featuring their national dishes for sale as well as arts, crafts, music and dance celebrating their origins.
Avontuur is pairing wine with some of the dishes on offer on the day, so if you wanted to know which wine to enjoy with a typical Portuguese Prego Roll, Greek Moussaka or a spicy Thai chicken curry, make a point of tasting the Avontuur range – and decide for yourself.
In addition free kiddies entertainment, a beer garden with imported beers and Avontuur wine for tasting and for sale, and mingling with the who’s who of South African racing, should make it a day to remember.
Access to the race course is free and the event is incredibly family friendly. We look forward to seeing you there.
